What makes hybrid service different
A hybrid is a gas car with a second drivetrain. The engine still needs oil, filters, and spark plugs. The hybrid side adds a few items that are easy to miss:
The 12-volt battery. Hybrids still have a small 12-volt battery. It powers the computers that start the hybrid system. When it weakens, the car may not reach "Ready" even with a healthy high-voltage battery. It is the first thing to test on a no-start hybrid.
Inverter coolant. The inverter converts battery power for the electric motors, and on Toyota hybrids it has its own cooling loop and electric pump. On many models the first coolant replacement comes around 100,000 miles.
Battery cooling fan and filter. Many Toyota hybrids cool the high-voltage battery with cabin air pulled through a vent near the rear seat. Pet hair and dust clog the filter, the battery runs hot, and it loses capacity sooner. Cleaning it is quick.
Brakes. Regenerative braking does most of the slowing, so pads last a long time. The downside is that calipers and slides that rarely move can seize from road salt. They get checked at every inspection.
Winter behavior. In cold weather the gas engine runs more to heat the cabin and warm up, so winter fuel economy drops. That is normal. A sudden drop in warm weather is worth a look.

Do I need the dealer to service my hybrid?
No. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, maintenance done at an independent shop does not void the factory warranty, as long as it follows the schedule and you keep the records. That includes the hybrid system coverage. The Beavercreek shop follows the schedule for your Prius, Camry Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, Escape Hybrid, or Insight, including inverter coolant and the battery cooling filter, and Murphy's gives you an itemized record of each visit.
If the high-voltage battery fails while it is still under the manufacturer's hybrid warranty, the dealer handles that repair, along with safety recalls. After that coverage ends, the Beavercreek shop tests the battery and the rest of the hybrid system before recommending anything.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a regular shop work on a hybrid?
Yes, if the technicians are trained for it. At Murphy's, ASE Master Certified technicians handle hybrid drivetrains and high-voltage batteries. Hybrids also need the same oil changes, brakes, tires, and suspension work as any car.
Why won't my Prius go into Ready mode?
The most common cause is a weak 12-volt auxiliary battery. It powers the computers that start the hybrid system, so when it is low the car may not reach Ready even though the high-voltage battery is fine. The technicians test the 12-volt battery first.
Do hybrids need different maintenance?
Mostly the same, plus a few hybrid-only items: inverter coolant on a separate cooling loop, a battery cooling fan and filter on many Toyota hybrids, and closer attention to brake calipers, which can seize from road salt because regenerative braking uses them less.
Which hybrids do you service?
Toyota Prius, Camry Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, and Highlander Hybrid, Lexus hybrids, Ford Escape Hybrid, Honda Insight and Accord Hybrid, and other common hybrid models.
Do I need the dealer to service my hybrid?
No. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, maintenance done at an independent shop does not void the factory warranty, including hybrid system coverage, as long as it follows the schedule and you keep records. A high-voltage battery repair still under the manufacturer's hybrid warranty, and safety recalls, go to the dealer.
