Maintenance Minder, explained

Most Hondas from 2006 on calculate their own service intervals. The dash shows a letter and numbers:

  • A is an oil change. B is an oil and filter change with a full inspection.
  • 1 tire rotation, 2 air filters and drive belt, 3 transmission or CVT fluid, 4 spark plugs, timing belt (V6), and valve adjustment, 5 coolant, 6 rear differential fluid (AWD), 7 brake fluid.

The advisor reads the code with you and quotes only what it covers.

Common Honda work

V6 timing belt. The 3.5L V6 in the Pilot, Odyssey, Ridgeline, and Accord V6 uses a timing belt, due with code 4 around 100,000 miles. The water pump is behind the belt and is normally replaced with it. Read Honda timing belt service.

CVT fluid. Civics, CR-Vs, Accords, HR-Vs, and Fits use continuously variable transmissions that depend on the correct fluid. A shudder or a droning sound under light throttle is a reason to check it.

1.5L turbo oil dilution. On some 2017 and 2018 CR-Vs and other 1.5L turbo Hondas, fuel can mix into the oil during cold Ohio winters. A rising oil level or a fuel smell on the dipstick are the signs. Honda issued software updates for affected models.

Oil consumption on older Accords. Some 2008 to 2011 Accords were covered by a Honda warranty extension for piston ring oil consumption. Read the Honda warranty extension for Accord piston rings.

Brakes and A/C. Road salt seizes caliper slides, and condensers on some newer Civics have drawn complaints for leaks. A free A/C performance check is one of Murphy's always-free services.

Will an independent shop void my Honda warranty?

No. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, maintenance done at an independent shop does not void the factory warranty, as long as it follows the schedule and you keep the records. The Beavercreek shop follows the Maintenance Minder codes your Civic, Accord, CR-V, Pilot, or Odyssey shows, and Murphy's gives you an itemized record of each visit.

Two jobs still belong at the dealer: repairs Honda pays for under the factory warranty, and safety recalls. Oil changes, Maintenance Minder service, CVT fluid, timing belts, brakes, tires, and repairs after the warranty can all be done here.

How a visit works

  1. Book. Call the Beavercreek shop or book online.
  2. Inspect. A digital inspection shows what the technician found.
  3. Approve. No repair starts until you approve it.

A complimentary shuttle is available, and repairs carry a 36-month/36,000-mile warranty, as described on our About page. South-side drivers can use Kettering Honda repair at the Centerville shop. Acura owners: see Beavercreek Acura repair. Everything else here is on Beavercreek auto repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does a Honda Pilot or Odyssey need a timing belt?

The 3.5L V6 in the Pilot, Odyssey, Ridgeline, and Accord V6 uses a timing belt. The Maintenance Minder calls for it with code 4, usually around 100,000 miles or 7 years. Most owners replace the water pump and drive belt at the same time.

How often does a Honda CVT need fluid?

Honda CVTs in the Civic, CR-V, Accord, HR-V, and Fit need fluid when the Maintenance Minder shows code 3. CVTs are sensitive to fluid type, so use Honda-specification fluid.

My CR-V oil level is going up. Is that a problem?

On some 2017 and 2018 CR-Vs and other Honda 1.5L turbo engines, fuel can mix into the oil in cold weather, raising the oil level and giving it a fuel smell. Honda issued software updates for affected models. The technicians check the oil and look up any open updates for your VIN.

Do you work on all Honda models?

Yes. The Beavercreek shop services Honda cars, SUVs, minivans, and trucks, including Civic, Accord, CR-V, HR-V, Pilot, Odyssey, Ridgeline, and Insight hybrids.

Will an independent shop void my Honda warranty?

No. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, maintenance done at an independent shop does not void the factory warranty, as long as it follows the schedule and you keep records. Murphy's provides an itemized record of each visit. Warranty repairs and safety recalls still go to the dealer.
