October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Murphy's Autocare
Murphy's Autocare of Beavercreek and Centerville is hoping to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.
During the entire month of October, Murphy's Autocare runs a brake service promotion that includes free brake pads and/or brake shoes with the purchase of a complete brake service. 10% of brake service sales during October are then donated to KMC's Women's Wellness Fund.
Let's join together to fight cancer!
How this October tradition started
Murphy's Autocare has supported breast cancer causes every October since at least 2015. That year, we joined Brakes for Breasts, a fundraiser in which nearly 100 shops nationwide offered free brake pads or shoes during October and donated 10% of brake service proceeds to the Cleveland Clinic. The money supported human testing of a breast cancer vaccine discovered by Dr. Vincent Tuohy. In 2016, our customers helped us raise $2,476.30, our most successful year at the time. Read about it in Our Brakes for Breasts Ends with Success.
Today the October donation stays close to home. It goes to the Women's Wellness Fund at Kettering Medical Center, which supports women's health in the Miami Valley.
Why October is a good month for brakes
October is the last stretch before Ohio winter. Wet leaves, early frost, and the first snow all ask more of your brakes, and stopping distances grow on slick roads. Having the brakes checked in the fall means any worn pads, rotors, or fluid get handled before the roads turn icy.
Signs your brakes need attention
- Squealing or squeaking when you stop. See Why do my brakes squeak?
- Grinding, which can mean the pads are worn to metal
- A pulsing or vibrating brake pedal, often from worn or warped rotors
- The vehicle pulling to one side when you brake
- A soft or spongy pedal, or a pedal that sinks toward the floor
- A brake warning light on the dash
If you notice any of these, don't wait for October. Every brake job at Murphy's Autocare starts with a digital inspection, with photos sent to your phone or email, and nothing is replaced until you approve it.
