Light-Duty Diesel Service for Dayton Truck Owners

If you own a diesel truck, SUV, or van in the Dayton area, you already know that not every shop is equipped to work on your vehicle. Diesel engines have different oil requirements, unique fuel systems, emissions components that gas engines don't have, and diagnostic procedures that require specific training and tooling. A shop that's great with your spouse's Camry may not be the right fit for your Duramax or Powerstroke.

Murphy's Autocare has been working on diesel-powered vehicles at our Beavercreek and Centerville locations for years. Our ASE Master Certified technicians understand the differences between diesel and gasoline drivetrains β€” and more importantly, they understand the differences between diesel platforms. A 3.0L Duramax and a 6.7L Cummins are not the same engine, and they shouldn't be treated the same way.

We focus on light-duty diesel vehicles: the trucks, SUVs, and commercial vans that Dayton-area families and businesses depend on every day. Whether it's a routine oil change on your Ram 2500, a check engine light on your Silverado diesel, or a DEF system issue on your Ford Super Duty, we have the experience and equipment to diagnose it correctly and fix it right the first time.

Vehicles We Service

We work on a wide range of light-duty diesel vehicles, including:

  • Β½-ton diesel trucks β€” Chevy Silverado 1500 Diesel, Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, Ford F-150 Power Stroke
  • ΒΎ-ton diesel trucks β€” Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra 2500HD, Ram 2500, Ford F-250 and F-350
  • Diesel SUVs β€” Chevy Tahoe and Suburban with Duramax, GMC Yukon, Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator EcoDiesel
  • Commercial vans β€” Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit, Ram ProMaster
  • Fleet diesel vehicles β€” work trucks, service vans, and commercial fleets

Diesel Engines We Know

3.0L Duramax (Mini Max)

Found in the Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500, Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon. This is a newer engine platform, and many shops aren't familiar with its specific needs β€” including the oil pump belt that requires periodic inspection and service. We know the Mini Max inside and out.

6.6L Duramax

The workhorse diesel in Chevy and GMC ΒΎ-ton and one-ton trucks. We regularly work on injector issues, fuel contamination problems, and DEF system faults that are common on higher-mileage trucks.

6.7L Powerstroke

Ford's heavy-duty diesel, found in the F-250 through F-550 Super Duty line. Common issues we see include turbocharger problems, EGR cooler failures, and DEF system faults. Our diagnostic equipment can read Ford-specific trouble codes and pinpoint the issue without guesswork.

6.7L Cummins

Ram's inline-six diesel β€” legendary for durability, but not immune to problems. EGR system issues, high-pressure fuel pump failures, and turbo actuator faults are common on higher-mileage trucks. We understand what Cummins engines need and how to keep them running.

EcoDiesel Platforms

The 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 is found in the Ram 1500, Jeep Wrangler, and Jeep Gladiator. These are popular with owners who want diesel efficiency in a lighter platform. We service both Gen 1 and Gen 2 EcoDiesel engines, including emissions system repairs and oil cooler housing issues that are common failure points.

Our Diesel Services

Diesel Maintenance

Diesel maintenance is not the same as gas engine maintenance. Diesel engines hold more oil β€” often 10 to 15 quarts β€” and require a different oil specification. They have fuel filters that need regular replacement (something gas engines don't have), and modern diesels require DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) for their emissions systems. Skipping or delaying these services can lead to expensive repairs.

  • Diesel oil & filter changes (correct weight and specification for your engine)
  • Fuel filter replacement (primary and secondary)
  • Air filter & induction system service
  • Cooling system service
  • Oil pump belt service (specific to the 3.0L Duramax)

Diesel Diagnostics

When something goes wrong with a diesel, the symptoms can be subtle at first β€” reduced power, slightly rough idle, a warning light that comes and goes. Diesel diagnostics require understanding the fuel system, turbocharger, emissions components, and engine management systems specific to each platform. We invest in the diagnostic tools and training to get it right.

  • Check engine light diagnosis for diesel-specific codes
  • Low oil pressure investigation and testing
  • Fuel system diagnostics (injectors, high-pressure pump, supply system)
  • Turbocharger inspection and diagnostics
  • Glow plug testing and starting system evaluation

Diesel Repair

When diagnostics point to a failed component, we handle the repair in-house. We source OE-quality parts and use correct torque specifications, fluid types, and procedures for each diesel platform.

  • Injector replacement
  • Turbo replacement and rebuilds
  • EGR system repairs (valve, cooler, piping)
  • DEF system diagnosis and repair (injector, heater, sensor, tank)
  • High-pressure fuel system repairs (CP4/CP3 pumps, fuel rails, supply lines)

Why Diesel Owners Choose Murphy's

  • ASE Master Certified technicians with diesel-specific training and diagnostic equipment
  • Correct parts and fluids β€” we use the right oil specification, the right filters, and OE-quality replacement parts for your specific engine

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work on diesel trucks?

Yes. Murphy's Autocare services light-duty diesel trucks, SUVs, and commercial vans. We work on Β½-ton diesels like the Silverado 1500 and Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, ΒΎ-ton trucks like the F-250, Ram 2500, and Silverado 2500HD, and commercial vans like the Sprinter and Transit. Our technicians are trained on diesel-specific systems including fuel injection, turbocharging, and emissions controls.

What diesel engines do you service?

We service all common light-duty diesel engines: the 3.0L Duramax (Mini Max), 6.6L Duramax, 6.7L Powerstroke, 6.7L Cummins, and EcoDiesel platforms. Each engine family has unique maintenance requirements and common failure points β€” our technicians understand the differences and service each one according to its specific needs.

How much does a diesel oil change cost?

Diesel oil changes cost more than gas engine oil changes for two reasons: diesel engines hold significantly more oil (typically 10-15 quarts compared to 5-6 for a gas engine) and require a higher-specification oil. The exact cost depends on your engine and the oil specification it requires. Call us for a quick, accurate quote β€” Beavercreek: 937-426-2886, Centerville: 937-433-0140.

Do you service DEF systems?

Yes. DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) systems are required on all modern diesel trucks for emissions compliance. These systems can develop problems β€” warning lights, reduced power mode, crystallization in the injector or lines. We diagnose and repair DEF system issues including the DEF injector, heater, level sensor, and quality sensor. Ignoring DEF warnings can result in your truck going into limp mode or refusing to restart.

Can you diagnose diesel turbo problems?

Absolutely. Turbocharger issues are one of the more common diesel complaints we see β€” reduced power under load, excessive black or blue smoke, an unusual whine or whistle, and oil consumption. We test turbo boost pressure, inspect the wastegate or VGT mechanism, and check for bearing wear. Some turbo problems are actually caused by other systems (restricted exhaust, failing sensors), and we'll identify the root cause before recommending a repair.

Do you service diesel fleet vehicles?

Yes. We work with local businesses that run diesel fleet vehicles β€” commercial vans, pickup trucks, and service vehicles. We can set up a maintenance schedule for your fleet, track service history, and help you keep your vehicles on the road with minimal downtime. Learn more about our fleet services.
