Want a free oil change?

Want a free oil change?

In November 2015, we ran a contest: the first 10 people to answer our question correctly won a free standard oil change (a $30 value) from Murphy's Autocare. The question was simple: Do you know what this is?

That contest has ended. Thank you to everyone who played. Call either shop to ask about current specials.

How often should you change your oil?

The right interval depends on your vehicle and how you drive it. Start with your owner's manual or your vehicle's oil life monitor. Many newer cars running synthetic oil go well past the old 3,000-mile rule, while older engines and hard-working vehicles need oil more often.

Your driving counts as severe service, which shortens the interval, if you:

  • Make mostly short trips, where the engine never fully warms up
  • Tow, haul, or carry heavy loads
  • Drive in stop-and-go traffic or dusty conditions
  • Let the engine idle for long periods

Conventional, synthetic blend, or full synthetic?

  • Conventional oil is refined from crude oil and works in many older engines.
  • Synthetic blend mixes conventional and synthetic oils for better protection at a moderate price.
  • Full synthetic resists heat and breakdown best and flows better in cold Ohio mornings. Many newer engines require it.

The right choice is the one your manufacturer specifies. Using the wrong grade can affect performance and warranty coverage.

Signs your oil change is overdue

  • The oil change or maintenance light is on
  • The oil on the dipstick is dark, gritty, or below the add mark
  • The engine sounds louder or ticks on startup
  • You smell burning oil, or the level drops between changes. See why excessive oil consumption isn't normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the free oil change contest still running?

No. The free standard oil change contest ran in November 2015. Call either Murphy's Autocare shop to ask about current specials.

How often should I change my oil?

Follow your owner's manual or your vehicle's oil life monitor. Short trips, towing, stop-and-go traffic, and dusty roads count as severe service and shorten the interval.

Should I use synthetic oil?

Use the oil your manufacturer specifies. Full synthetic resists heat and breakdown best and flows better in cold weather, and many newer engines require it.
