February is BG Fluid Flush Month

During February 2018, Murphy's Autocare ran a BG flush promotion:

  • $10 off coolant, power steering, brake, fuel injection, differential, and transfer case service
  • $20 off synthetic transmission flush
  • $30 off gasoline direct injection (GDI) service

That promotion has ended. Call either shop to ask about current specials.

What each fluid service does

Every fluid in a vehicle has a job, and every one wears out. Heat, moisture, and contamination break fluids down long before they look empty. Here is what each service on that list covers.

Coolant

Coolant keeps the engine from freezing in winter and overheating in summer. It also carries corrosion inhibitors that protect the radiator, water pump, and heater core. Those inhibitors wear out over time, even when the level looks full.

Brake fluid

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air. Water lowers its boiling point, which can make the pedal feel soft under hard braking, and it corrodes brake lines and calipers from the inside. Read more in Is a brake fluid change really necessary?

Power steering fluid

Hydraulic power steering fluid breaks down and picks up debris, which wears the pump and rack. Many newer vehicles use electric power steering and have no fluid to service. We check which system your vehicle has.

Transmission fluid

Transmission fluid cools, lubricates, and carries the pressure that shifts the gears. Old fluid shifts poorly and lets parts overheat. Our post What is a transmission flush? explains the service.

Differential and transfer case

Rear-wheel-drive, four-wheel-drive, and all-wheel-drive vehicles carry gear oil in the differentials and transfer case. Towing, hauling, and off-road driving are hard on it.

Fuel injection service

This service cleans deposits from fuel injectors and the intake so fuel sprays evenly. Symptoms of dirty injectors include rough idle, hesitation, and lower fuel economy.

Gasoline direct injection (GDI) service

GDI engines spray fuel straight into the cylinder instead of over the intake valves. Without fuel washing them, the intake valves collect carbon deposits over time. Heavy buildup causes rough idle, misfires, and hesitation. A GDI service cleans the intake side of the engine.

How to know when a fluid is due

Your owner's manual lists intervals for each fluid, and severe service, such as towing or short trips, shortens them. Every visit to Murphy's Autocare includes a digital vehicle inspection with photos sent to your phone or email, so you can see the fluid condition before you decide. Nothing is serviced without your approval. See our full list of maintenance services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the February BG fluid flush discount still available?

No. Those prices were a February 2018 promotion. Call either Murphy's Autocare shop to ask about current specials.

Why does brake fluid need to be changed?

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air. Water lowers its boiling point and corrodes brake lines and calipers from the inside.

What is a GDI service?

Gasoline direct injection engines spray fuel straight into the cylinder, so the intake valves are not washed by fuel and collect carbon. A GDI service cleans those deposits from the intake side of the engine.

How do I know which fluid services my car needs?

Start with the intervals in your owner's manual. At Murphy's Autocare, every visit includes a digital inspection that shows fluid condition, and you approve any service before it is done.
