Car engine crank a little slow lately?

Why a slow crank matters
When you turn the key or press the start button, the starter motor draws a large surge of current from the battery. If the battery can't deliver it, the engine turns over slowly, clicks, or doesn't start at all. A slow crank is often the only warning before a no-start, and it tends to show up on the first cold morning of the season.
Common causes
- An aging battery. Most batteries we test fail after three to four years.
- Leaks and corrosion. Acid seeping from the terminals or case seal builds white or green corrosion that blocks current.

- A charging problem. A failing alternator can't recharge the battery while you drive.
- A drain while parked. A module or light that stays on can flatten a good battery overnight.
Why cold weather makes it worse
Cold slows the chemical reaction inside a battery, so it delivers less power on a cold morning. At the same time, cold oil is thicker, and the starter has to work harder to turn the engine. A battery that seemed fine in October can leave you stranded in January.
